Cape Town, South Africa
Ode to an Architect is an experimental short film following the occupational spiritual (dis)connection of a character who reads about her experience of Cape Town as a South African Black woman. Ode to an Architect is Matri-Archi’s first project, looking to storytelling and poetry as a medium of spatial critique and discourse outside of the typical purview of the praxis. The film was launched at a film screening event hosted by Matri-Archi at The Drawing Room (Observatory, Cape Town), which brought together other young artists to present their artwork including Bonolo Thomas (DJ set), Ibtishaam Toffar and Darren Coventry (painting exhibition). The film was submitted as an entry to the African Architecture Awards in 2017 in the category “critical dialogue” although, it was not awarded the prize.
